Leadership Workshops
"Beyond School" - Houston Leadership Workshop PDF Print E-mail

Background

On Saturday, December 3, 2005, Indify conducted a pilot leadership workshop for Indian-American high school students in Houston, Texas.  The purpose of the workshop (intended to be the first of a series of workshops) was to get high school students to think about the purpose of leadership and its application to their lives.

The workshop involved 25 high school students (grades 9-12), representing 7 different high schools in the Houston area.  The students ranged in grade from 9th grade to a junior in college.  Slightly more girls than boys attended.

The workshop was actively promoted to the students themselves (rather than to the parents), to recruit young students who are genuinely interested in community-building and leadership.  The workshop, which was open to all Indian-American high school students, lasted from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.  Lunch (pizza) was provided.  The entire event was free of charge for the participants.

Click on the "Read more" link below to see a review of the workshop (with some commentary about things that worked or did not work), the expenses for the event, tips for future workshops, and documents that can be modified for future workshops in different areas.  We encourage Indicorps alumni (and anyone else interested) to use this document as background material, in creating their own models.  Indify may help support workshops that meet our standards of professionalism and constructive content, but we encourage each person/region to define his/her own content and style.
